This gorgeous preowned eggcellent egg box is a two-inch-tall rarely seen masterpiece of solid sterling and enamel work. Clearly marked "925" inside the bottom of each half of the box (see the last two photos), it is decorated with the finest cloisonné enamel flowers I've ever seen. I think that this was made in China, home to some of the world's best cloisonné, although an expert has contacted me with his opinion that this was crafted in Russia. So it was possibly made in Russia or China but I can't be sure of the origin.
The little plastic stand is included. Without the stand, the egg weighs 39.7 grams, well over a troy ounce of silver. The previous owner said it was purchased circa 1920. If true, it is an antique, but I have no way of knowing with certainity. The top of the egg is smaller and more pointed and the lower half is larger and has a more rounded bottom. The inner silver lip of the lower half has a slight bend in a few spots. It is hardly noticeable but I want to point out even the smallest issue.
PLEASE NOTE: In the first two photos, you may be able to see a small gap at the center. This egg does not close tightly. If you place the bottom half of the egg on a hard surface and gently twist the top half around after closing (without pushing down), you will eventually find the spot where it closes with only a small gap. I do not know how to close it to completely eliminate a gap. If you do not take the time to find the right spot for closure, the gap will definitely be noticeable.
This would make an exquisite jewelry storage box for Russian style enamel sterling egg pendants and lockets.
